The book is written based on the successful construction of the Shuibuya CFRD after its 7 years trouble-free operation as the successful experiences for CFRD construction.

The height of Concrete Face Rockfill Dams (CFRDs) has been steadily increasing during the past forty years. During this period the height of CFRDs have increased from 110m (Cethana, Australia, 1971) to 233m (Shuibuya, China, 2008)

The high rainfall, averaging about 4,500mm per annum; the unique ridge-and-gully topography; beddings of hard greywacke and relatively soft shale geology of the site pose some serious challenges to the design and construction of the 203m high Bakun CFRD.
